Giving Back

The Aloha Spirit refers to the friendly, accepting attitude for which the Hawaiian Islands are famous. But it’s also about living in the moment, cherishing loved ones and sharing with the community. With this spirit in mind, Kohana Coffee reaches out to the communities in which we are involved, participating in a variety of activities like the innovative education program with the Austin Montessori School.

Kohana U: Grounds for Education We’re proud to be working with the Austin Montessori School, providing 7th through 9th graders the opportunity to learn about business and hone essential skills in a real-world business environment.

Working with Kohana roaster, Ted King, students participate in almost every aspect of the coffee roasting business. Activities include everything from weighing green coffee and operating roasting equipment to packaging, marketing and sales. Students gain an understanding of such key business factors as yield and shrink cost; wholesale and retail pricing; and profit and loss. The program also provides the opportunity to impart awareness on such global issues as organic farming and fair trade business practices.
